If all goes according to plan, there will be 500 vegetable-producing gardens in Madisonville this spring.
Organizers of the want to make sure nobody has to walk further than their own yard to taste vine-ripened tomatoes, peppers and zucchini. Without a car, many residents cannot get to a grocery store easily.
The goal is that one in ten households plant a garden with the help of volunteers.
To get a garden here's what has to happen:
- Pay $50
- The money includes a gardening class you will attend
- Be assigned a mentor
- Volunteers come to your house and build a raised garden. The garden will be 4' x 8' x 8"
- Receive plant seeds and starts to get your garden growing
If you live in an apartment the 500 Gardens Project is identifying vacant lots for community gardens. You can still sign up to get a garden.
If you want to be a mentor:
The project is an outgrowth of the Lighthouse Community School gardens.
The 500 Gardens project plans to create a handbook for other communities.
