The is presenting a year-long program series, "," to commemorates the 55th anniversary of Freedom Summer, a 1964 voter registration drive, also known as the Mississippi Summer Project.
The project's goal was to end the prevailing discriminatory and segregated voting system through increased voter registration of African Americans. In preparation, hundreds of student volunteers gathered for two, one-week orientation sessions in June of 1964 at Western College for Women (present day Miami University) in Oxford, Ohio.
Joining Cincinnati Edition to discuss Freedom Summer and other upcoming events at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center are University of Cincinnati Associate Professor, , Littisha Bates, PhD. ();and Freedom Center Director of Education & Community Engagement Christopher Miller and Marketing and Communications Manager Will Jones.
On Thursday, February 28, at 6 p.m. the Freedom Center will present "." The event is free but reservations are requested.
The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center is offering guests individual free general admission through Thursday, February 28, sponsored by Gallagher Insurance in honor of Black History Month.
