was U.S. Ambassador to the Soviet Union from 1987-1991. During a Foreign Service career that spanned 35 years, he served four tours in Moscow and several years in Washington dealing with Soviet and European affairs. Since retiring, he鈥檚 held several academic positions, most recently with Duke University (Rubenstein Fellow, 2015-2017).
