From : The US is having a vital discussion on trade deals and the loss of American manufacturing jobs. President Trump and other voices from the right have taken a protectionist stance, calling for the renegotiation of Nafta and other trade agreements. But protectionism hasn't always been a rallying cry of the right; at times, it has been a left wing issue.
Opinions on trade don't fall neatly along partisan lines. Yet, US trade policy has been a deeply contentious issue since the founding of the republic.
This episode, we'll look at how the US forms trade policies; how it uses international trade to influence other countries and promote stability; and how it balances domestic economic interests with foreign policy interests. We'll examine Nafta, the Trans-Pacific Partnership, and the World Trade Organization. And we'll talk about what could happen if the US takes a more isolationist approach in the global economy.
