Members of the Union Baptist Church are using a federal grant to restore a historic cemetery in Madisonville.

United American Cemetery — one of Ohio's oldest Black cemeteries — is getting $750,000 from the National Park Service to make improvements to the historical cemetery and grounds in Madisonville.

Funding is included in the recently signed Consolidated Appropriations Act to help restore and protect Black cemeteries. First introduced in 2019, the African American Burial Grounds Preservation Act came to be because of Cincinnati's Union Baptist Cemetery in Price Hill.

One of Ohio’s oldest African American cemeteries is closed because of contaminated groundwater containing human feces. Union Baptist Church leaders have struggled to get answers or help.
